A busy day of athletics action at the National Arena Abbotstown on Sunday 1st February March on day 2 of the 123.ie National Senior Indoor Championships. Ross Alexander of Coolquill A.C. who has made fantastic progress in the past 18 months since working off J&N endurance training plans, took to the track for senior Race Walking 5.000m Championship. It hasn’t been plain sailing for the Coolquill AC athlete in the build up to these championships with a serious dental infection but Ross had been in super form prior winning his Munster Master 45 category in a Munster record time of 14:39:27. He also won a Senior Bronze medal at the national Race Walk Road Championships is December last setting a new 20k men’s 45 record. Ross set off at a controlled pace tipping just under a minute per lap and remaining strong throughout and bar a small drop off in the 4th kilometre he battled hard through the final Kilometre to come home in a new personal best performance of 24:56:49 beating last year time of 25:10:59 by 14 seconds which at this level is fantastic. To put all this in perspective Ross is an over 45 master’s athlete who has dedicated most of his sporting life to Race walking. He is a man with a young family and a really active business which many of us can identify with. So, competing against walkers who are fighting for qualifications for world championships and Olympic places is no mean feat at all. Ross will no doubt be looking forward to the National Masters indoor in 2 weeks’ time. Where he will compete against his peers. We congratulate Ross and his Club on a fantastic performance at the National Senior indoor.
