Record Numbers @ Tipp Primary Schools Cross Country
A record breaking number of over 2800 children took part in the County Tipperary Primary Schools Cross Country Championships on Wednesday 1st October. Set in beautiful autumnal sunshine in the pristine grounds of Thurles Crokes A.C., it was a fantastic sight to see hundreds of participants don the brightly coloured singlets & jerseys of their respective schools & take part in their  800m & 1000m races. An extra special element was the presence of Irish TV who recorded the whole event for a forthcoming TV programme. More details to follow.

An Open Munster Athletics Meeting will take place on Friday 3rd October 2014 @ 8pm in the Forge, Charleville, Co. Cork. All Clubs are welcome to attend.

Schools Combined Events Championships

The Munster Schools Combined Events Championships will take place on Wednesday 5th November in Nenagh Indoor Stadium @ 11am. See Munster Schools Website here. The All Ireland Schools Combined Events Championships take place on Saturday 15th November in AIT Arena with the Schools International in the Emirates Arena, Glasgow on Saturday 13th December.

National Combined Events Squad Session

Fogarty & Danagher win Templemore Track & Trail 4 Mile Race
The Annual Templemore A.C. Track & Trail 4 Miler was held on Sunday 14th September 2014. This very popular run attracted 134 competitors with local athletes, Tony Fogarty & Margaret Danagher, Templemore A.C. the first male & female finishers.

Borrisoleigh Track Attack
A new initiative in Borrisoleigh to promote sporting & recreational activities in the local & surrounding areas. The Borrisoleigh Track Attack will include a 42km Marathon Challenge, an upcoming series of races which will be held on the new track surrounding the hurling field in Borrisoleigh.

53 Munster "B" Medals for Tipp

The Munster Juvenile "B" Track & Field Championships were held on Sunday 31st August  in Templemore.  The County was strongly represented with our athletes winning 53 medals in total (17 gold, 18 silver & 18 bronze). Congratulations & well done to all our young athletes.

County 10 Mile Road Titles for Maunsell & Loughnane
The County 10 Mile Road Championships took place in summery conditions in Ballynonty on Sunday 31st August. Clonmel A.C. occupied the top 3 places with William Maunsell in 1st, Niall McCormack in 2nd & David Mansfield in 3rd place. Madeline Loughnane, Thurles Crokes A.C. took the Women's title with Martina Ryan, Thurles Crokes A.C. & Yvonne O'Connor, Clonmel A.C. the next two women across the finish line.

Successful National Community Games for Tipp

Tipperary athletes were to the fore at the National Community Games Athletics Finals in Athlone on Saturday 23rd & Sunday 24th August. They took home a fine haul of 12 individual medals (6 gold, 2 silver, 2 bronze & 2 Pewter) & 5 sets of Relay medals (1 gold, 2 silver & 2 bronze). There were gold medal wins for Miriam Daly & Jake Vermeer, Carrick-On-Suir A.C. in the Girls & Boys U/14 80mH, Maria Carey, Newport A.C. in the Girls U/16 Triple Jump & Sean Mockler, Daniel & David Ryan, Moycarkey Coolcroo A.C. in the Boys U/14 Javelin, Boys U/16 100m & Boys U/16 Triple Jump. Silver medals were won by Sharlene Mawdsley, Newport A.C. in the Girls U/16 100m & Joseph McEvoy, Nenagh Olymic A.C. in the Boys U/14 Long Jump & bronze medals for Joe Finn, Ballina in the Boys U/8 80m & Adam Dooley, Roscrea A.C. in the Boys U/14 100m. Pewter medals for 4th place went to Khya Lynch, Roscrea A.C. in the Girls U/10 60mH & Aoibhe O'Shea, Kilkenny City Harriers A.C./Ballingarry in the Girls U/16 1500m. Relay medals were won by Roscrea Boys U/14 4 x 100m (gold), Carrick-On-Suir Girls U/12 & U/14 4 x 100m (silver each), Newport Girls U/16 4 x 100m (bronze) & Burgess U/10 Mixed Relay (Bronze). Congratulations to all our athletes.

Well done to Adam King, Iveragh A.C. who placed 8th in the "A" Final of the Hammer with a throw of 71.49m. Michaela Walsh, Swinford A.C. was 6th in the "A" Shot Putt Final with a pb of 15.69m & Roseanna McGuckian, City of Lisburn A.C. was 3rd in the "B" Final of the 200m. See AAI Report here. Top 50 Hurdles Clubs of All Time
The Irish Hurdlers Blog has compiled a Top 50 of the best Irish Hurdles Clubs which show Carrick-On-Suir A.C. at No. 2 behind Ferrybank A.C. & Nenagh Olympic A.C. in 6th place. Read more here.

Nanjing 2014 Summer Youth Olympic Games
5 Irish athletes, Louise Shanahan, Leevale A.C., Adam King, Iveragh A.C., Eoin Sheridan, North Westmeath A.C.,  Michaela Walsh, Swinford A.C. & Roseanna McGuckian, City of Lisburn A.C. will be competing. Win for Fagan at National Community Games Finals
Congratulations to Emma Fagan, Newport A.C. who recorded a gold medal win in the Girls U/15 Duathlon at the National Community Games Finals in Athlone on Sunday 17th August. The Duathlon consists of a 1400m Run, an 8000m Cycle & a 1400m run.

National 4 x 100m Record for Templemore A.C.
The GloHealth Masters Track & Field Championships were held in Tullamore on Sunday 10th August. Tipperary athletes took home 26 individual medals (8 gold, 5 silver & 13 bronze) & gold & silver in the Relay competitions.  Top performances of the day came from the Templemore A.C. Master Men's 4 x 100m Relay team who set a new National Record of 45.50 with Patrick Naughton, Nenagh Olympic A.C. adding another 4 gold & 1 silver to his impressive collection of medals won at these Championships over the years. Other multiple medal winners were Pat Shelly, Ballynonty A.C. (2 bronze M7), Anthony Carolan, Nenagh Olympic A.C. (2 bronze M3), Peter Ryan, Nenagh Olympic A.C. (2 gold M3), Adrian McGinley, Templemore A.C. (1 silver, 2 bronze M1), Ken Lee, Templemore A.C. (2 bronze M1), Pat Corcoran, Tipperary Town A.C. Celtic Honours for Tipp Athletes

Tipperary athletes had some excellent results at the Celtic Games in Morton Stadium, Santry on Saturday 9th August. It was a historic day for Ireland who won every age category, boys & girls to lift the overall title. Daniel Ryan, Moycarkey Coolcroo A.C., the Irish Boys U/16 Captain led the charge winning the Boys U/16 100mH setting a new Celtic Record of 13.58 & later in the day he was a key member of the Irish Mixed U/16 4 x 100m Relay that set another new Celtic Record with their run of 45.42. Kelly Ann Doyle, Carrick-On-Suir A.C. had a great run in the U/18 Girls 400mH to win with a new Celtic Record of 62.85 & she was also instrumental in the 2nd placing for Ireland in the 4 x 400m Relay with Aoife Delargy, Templemore A.C. also on the team. Maria Carey, Newport A.C. was in fine form winning the Girls U/18 Triple Jump equalling the Celtic Record with Michael Quilligan, Nenagh Olympic A.C. placing 2nd in the Boys U/18 400mH & being an integral part of the Irish 4 x 400m Relay team that won gold.  There was also silver for Aoife Vaughan Witts, Borrisokane A.C. in the Girls U/18 Hammer. Our Development Team also performed very well with bronze for Killian Cullagh, Nenagh Olympic A.C. in the Boys U/18 2km Steeplechase, silver for Sharlene Mawdsley, Newport A.C. in the Girls U/18 200m & 4th in the U/18 4 x 100m Relay & bronze for Ciara Mockler, Moycarkey Coolcroo A.C. in the Girls U/18 Shot Putt. Nenagh Olympic A.C. 2nd in National League Final

Nenagh Olympic A.C. were Tipperary's sole representatives at the National League Final in Tullamore on Sunday 3rd August. They posted excellent results to finish 2nd in Division 1 behind Donore Harriers A.C.

National Gold Combined Events Medals for McEvoy & Ryan
Both Joseph McEvoy, Nenagh Olympic A.C. & Daniel Ryan, Moycarkey Coolcroo A.C. put in great performances at the GloHealth National Juvenile Combined Events Championships in Tullamore on Saturday 2nd August. Tipperary's only representatives on the day, Joseph took gold in the Boys U/14 competition with Daniel winning the Boys U/16 competition.

At Day 4 of the GloHealth National Juvenile Track & Field Championships in Tullamore on Sunday 27th July, Tipperary athletes added another 2 records to their tally. Maria Carey, Newport A.C. set a new record of 11.79m in the Girls U/17 Triple Jump with Liam McDonagh, Moycarkey Coolcroo A.C. setting a CBP of 10.27.90 in the Boys U/14 2km Walk. At Day 3 of the GloHealth National Juvenile Track & Field Championships in Tullamore on Saturday 26th July, Tipperary athletes set 3 new National Records. Kelly Ann Doyle, Carrick-On-Suir A.C. ran herself into the record books with her time of 61.22 in the Girls U/18 400mH, 
Daniel Ryan, Moycarkey Coolcroo A.C. set a new CBP in the Boys U/16 Long Jump with his leap of 6.49m while Aoife Vaughan Witts, Borrisokane A.C. threw 56.19m in the Girls U/19 Hammer to smash the previous record by over 5 metres. There were also gold medal wins for Michael Quilligan, Nenagh Olympic A.C. in the Boys U/18 400mH & Orlaith Moynihan, Clonmel A.C. in the Girls U/19 3000m.

 Tipperary athletes, Sharlene Mawdsley (200m & Relay) & Maria Carey (Triple Jump), St. Mary's Newport/Newport A.C., Daniel Ryan, Thurles CBS/Moycarkey Coolcroo A.C. (100mH & Long Jump) & Aaron Egan, High School, Clonmel/Clonmel A.C. (Walk) all competed for Ireland & their schools at the SIAB Schools Track & Field International in Cardiff on Saturday 19th July.  Aaron Egan won gold in the Walk, Maria Carey won silver in the Triple Jump, Sharlene Mawdsley won silver with the Girls 4 x 100m relay team & Daniel Ryan won bronze in the Long Jump. National Records for Ryan, Daly & Cummins
Daniel Ryan, Moycarkey Coolcroo A.C. recorded a great win in the Boys U/16 100mH at the National Track & Field Championships in Tullamore on Sunday 13th July. Ryan twice broke the 2006 record of 13.66 held by Irish International 400m Hurdler, Jason Harvey, Crusaders A.C. when he ran 13.30 in his heat & 13.45 in the final to win gold. Miriam Daly, Carrick-On-Suir A.C. also had a super run in the Girls U/14 75mH when she ran a national record of 11.30 to equal
the Pre-AAI record of 11.3 held by M. English, Tullamore since 1983 & break the 2010 record of 11.32 held by Kate McGowan, Tir Conaill. Another Tipp record breaker was Ciara Cummins, Nenagh Olympic A.C. who stormed home in the Girls U/18 2km Steeplechase with her winning time of 7.20.70. This broke the 2013 record of 7.24.75 held by Cliona Carthy, Celtic DCH set last year. 15 medals in total (6 gold, 7 silver & 2 bronze) were won by Tipperary athletes. The National Juvenile "B"" Track & Field Championships took place in Tullamore on Saturday 12th July. Tipp athletes fared well winning 143 medals in total (5 gold, 4 silver & 5 bronze). There were double gold medals for Rachel Walsh, Carrick-On-Suir A.C. in the Girls U/14 100m & Long Jump & a new national 100m record of 13.32; gold & silver for Dillon Ryan, Moycarkey Coolcroo A.C. in Boys U/12 Long Jump & Shot Putt; gold for Aimee Hayde, Newport A.C. in the Girls U/12 600m & a new record of 1.48.23; gold for Conor Hogan, Carrick-On-Suir A.C. in Boys U/12 High Jump; silver & bronze for Roseann Fitzgerald, Carrick-On-Suir A.C. in the Girls U/14 High Jump & Long Jump; silver for Oscar Ottman, Newport A.C. in Boys U/15 100m, silver for Noel Anyanwu, Carrick-On-Suir A.C.  in Boys U/14 Shot Putt & bronze medals for Aine Grace, Clonmel A.C. O'Doherty & Moore Win Coillte 10km

With 280 on the Start Line for the 29th Annual Coillte Road Races on Wednesday 2nd July, it was Siobhan O'Doherty, Borrisokane A.C. & Kevin Moore of host Club, Dundrum A.C. who were the Senior Women & Men's winners. Moore was the first Dundrum A.C. athlete to win the title in it's 29 year history.

National Junior Triple Jump Wins for Carey & Prout

The GloHealth National Junior & U/23 Track & Field Championships were held in Cork I.T. on Sunday 6th July. There were Junior Triple Jump wins for Maria Carey, Newport A.C. & Darren Prout, Carrick-On-Suir A.C. with Clonmel A.C. duo, Evan Lynch & Anthony Tobin winning gold & silver in the Junior 5km Walk. Silver medals were won by Darren Prout in the Junior Long Jump, Dan Finnerty, Nenagh Olympic A.C. in the Junior 400mH, Killian Cullagh, Nenagh Olympic AC. in the Junior 3km Steeplechase, Mark Tierney, Nenagh Olympic A.C. in the Junior 35lbs Weight for Distance, Aoife Bartley, Carrick-On-Suir A.C. in the U/23 Triple Jump & Long Jump, Ciara Cummin & Paul White, Nenagh Olympic A.C. in the Junior 1500m & 400m. Bronze medals were won by Leanne Prout & Kelly Ann Doyle, Carrick-On-Suir A.C. in the Junior 400mH & 100mH, Aoife Vaughan Witts, Borrisokane A.C. in the Junior Hammer & Sharlene Mawdsley, Newport A.C. in the Junior 200m.

National Juvenile Relay Championships

These Championships took place in Tullamore on Saturday 5th July. Tipperary had a small number of teams competing with Carrick-On-Suir A.C. finishing 5th in the both the Girls U/12 & U/14 competitions & Clonmel A.C. placing 15th in the Girls U/13 race.

The Tipperary Primary Schools Cross Country Championships will take place on Wednesday 1st October 2014 in Thurles Crokes Grounds.  The Borrisoleigh 5km Road Race will take place on Wednesday 20th August @ 7.30pm & the Lions Club of Roscrea 10km Road Race will take place on Saturday 11th October in Streamstown @ 11.30am.

Successful Sports Capital Grant Funding for Templemore A.C.

Templemore A.C. have been successful in securing 50k funding in the latest round of Sports Capital Grants. This is great news for the County & will further enhance this great athletics facility. The funding will enable the Club to create a 8/10 lane warm up strip & additional long jump pit.  Well done to all involved.

Munster Records for Carey, Daly, Doyle & Prout
The Munster U/14 to U/19 Track & Field Championships took place in Cork I.T. on Saturday 28th & Sunday 29th June. Tipperary athletes took home a fine haul of over 90 medals. There were records for Miriam Daly, Carrick-On-Suir A.C. in the U/14 75mH (11.73), Maria Carey, Newport A.C. in the U/17 Triple Jump (12.06m), Darren Prout, Carrick-On-Suir A.C. in the U/18 Triple Jump (13.58m) & Kelly Ann Doyle, Carrick-On-Suir A.C. in the Girls U/18 400mH (1.02.33). Notable performances also came from Daniel Ryan, Moycarkey Coolcroo A.C. who won gold medals in all 6 of his events (U/16 100m, 100mH, LJ, HJ, Shot & Discus) & Joseph McEvoy, Nenagh Olympic A.C who took home 4 gold & 2 bronze in the Boys U/14 75mH, HJ, Discus, Javelin, LJ & Shot.

The County was well represented by Templemore A.C. & Nenagh Olympic A.C. at the National Team Games in Tullamore on Saturday 21st June. Templemore A.C. took gold in the Girls U/10 Turbo Javelin with Nenagh Olympic A.C. taking gold in the Boys U/11 60m & silver in the Boys U/10 Long Jump. Templemore A.C. were also 4th in the Girls U/11 600m, 6th in the Boys U/9 Turbo Javelin & 8th in the Girls U/10 500m. Nenagh Olympic A.C. also recorded 4th in the Boys U/10 500m & Boys U/11 Turbo Javelin & 8th in the Boys U/10 Turbo Javelin.

Wins for Lynch & Egan at Small Nations 10km Race Walk

Evan Lynch & Aaron Egan, Clonmel A.C. were in top form at the Small Nations 10km Race Walking competition in Wipeon, Belgium at the weekend. Lining out for their country, Evan won the Men's event very convincingly in 44.45, a PB of 40 secs & just 20 secs off the World Junior 10km Walk standard. Aaron came home in 2nd place in a time of 46.43 with a massive 5 minutes improvement on his PB. These two great performances along with Ryan Cleary's efforts combined brilliantly to help the Irish team to retain the Small Nations Cup. The competition involved teams from England, Switzerland, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark & Ireland. Congratulations to our up & coming race walk stars.

Triple Jump Record for Carey at Tailteann Games
Maria Carey, Newport A.C. recorded a new Tailteann CBP in the Triple Jump with her jump of 11.56m to take gold at the Tailteann Games in Morton Stadium, Santry on Saturday 21st June. Her team-mate Sharlene Mawdsley also won gold in the 200m with Daniel Ryan, Moycarkey Coolcroo A.C. taking silver in the Long Jump & bronze in the 100mH. Phoebe Murphy, Clonmel A.C. was 4th in the 100m, Aoife Deering, Nenagh Olympic A.C. 6th in the 1500m, Aisling Vaughan Witts, Borrisokane A.C. & Rachel Ryan, Templemore A.C. were 9th & 10th in the Hammer with Elaine Yelverton, Newport A.C. 11th in the 800m.

These Championships took place on Saturday 14th June in Cork I.T. Carrick-On-Suir A.C. won double gold, Nenagh Olympic A.C. won double silver & bronze, Templemore A.C. won silver & Roscrea A.C. bronze.  Carrick-ON-Suir A.C. Girls U/14 4 x 100m Relay team also set a new CBP of 52.99.

The Munster U/9 to U/13 Track & Field Championships took place in Lee's Road, Ennis on the 7th & 8th of June. There were 8 individual medals in total for Tipp athletes in the U/12 & U/13 Championships (1 gold, 1 silver & 6 bronze). Big Numbers at Moyne Mini Marathon

Just under 600 competitors turned out at the recent Moyne A.C. 10km Mini Marathon on Monday 2nd June. Kevin Moore, Dundrum A.C. was the overall winner with Danny Smith, Ballynonty A.C. in 2nd place & Colm Turner, Limerick Tri Club in 3rd place. First lady home was Dympna Ryan, Dundrum A.C.

There were gold medals & new records for Maria Carey, St. Mary's Newport/Newport A.C. in the Inter Girls Triple Jump (11.93m) & Aaron Egan, High School, Clonmel/Clonmel A.C. in the Inter Boys 3km Walk (7.54.60). Daniel Ryan, Thurles CBS/Moycarkey Coolcroo A.C. won double gold a year out of his age in the Inter Boys 100mH & Long Jump with Evan Lynch, Gaelcholaiste Cheitinn/Clonmel A.C. winning gold in the Senior Boys 3km Walk & Kelly Anna Doyle, Scoil Mhuire, Carrick-On-Suir/Carrick-On-Suir A.C. in the Inter 300mH. Phoebe Murphy placed 4th in her 200m heat today in Baku in a new pb of 24.69 just missing out on a place in the next round & Aoife Vaughan Witts, Borrisokane A.C. was 10th in her qualifying round of the Hammer. Win for Doyle at AAI Games
The National Track & Field Season got off to a flying start with the AAI Games in Santry on Sunday 25th May. Kelly Ann Doyle, Carrick-On-Suir A.C. showed great form winning the Senior Women's 400mH in a time of 1.02.50 with her team-mate, Leanne Prout in 2nd place in 1.04.81. Kevin Manusell, Clonmel A.C. finished 5th in the Senior Men's 3km Steeplechase with William Hughes, Thurles Crokes A.C., William Maunsell, Clonmel A.C. & James Maher, Templemore A.C. finishing in 2nd, 4th & 5th place in their Senior Men's 800m race. The County was also represented by Eimear Lynch, Newport A.C. & Margaret Mary Grace, Nenagh Olympic A.C. in the Senior Women's 400m.

Murphy & Vaughan Witts Selected for Irish Team

Both Phoebe Murphy, Clonmel A.C. & Aoife Vaughan Witts, Borrisokane A.C. have been selected for the Irish team who will travel to Baku, Azerbijan for the European Youth Olympic Trials from 30th May to 1st June. Murphy will take part in the 200m while Vaughan Witts competes in the Hammer. Both athletes have shown great form so far this season & we wish them the very best of luck.

Nenagh Olympic A.C. Best County Club

The County U/13 to U/19 Track & Field Championships were held in cold, wet & windy conditions in Templemore on Saturday 10th & Sunday 11th May. After two days of competition, Nenagh Olympic A.C. emerged as top Club in the County followed closely by Carrick-On-Suir A.C. in 2nd place & Templemore A.C. in 3rd place. Many thanks to all the Clubs who provided officials over the two days.

The County Senior Road Championships took place on Sunday 13th April in Fethard. There were wins & County titles for Dympna Ryan, Dundrum A.C. & William Hughes, Thurles Crokes A.C. Thurles Crokes A.C. won the Women's "A" team title with Clonmel A.C. clinching the "B" title. In the Men's team competition, there was double gold for Dundrum A.C. in the "A" & "B" categories.

Tobin Joins Sub4 Club

Sean Tobin, Clonmel A.C. ran 3.59.91 to become the 39th Irish man to run a sub 4 minute mile. Sean, currently on an athletics scholarship with the University of Mississippi dipped under 4 minutes at the Husky Classic in Seattle, Washington.


County Tipperary Athletics Board is 90 Years Old
This year, the County Tipperary Athletics Board is ninety years in existence having been formed in Tobin's Hotel, Clonmel in February 1924. To mark the occasion, a directory of past officers, club & great athletes' profiles is being prepared by a former official, Jimmy Fogary. It would be greatly appreciated if former officers could forward details of the positions they held & the years involved to Jimmy. A brief outline of Clubs & the great moments in their history would also be appreciated. Details can be e-mailed to jfskehan2013@gmail.com.

National Juvenile Star Awards

Congratulations to Daniel Ryan, Moycarkey Coolcroo A.C. & Aaron Egan & Phoebe Murphy, Clonmel A,C. who all received awards at the Athletics Ireland Juvenile All Star Awards in the Tullamore Court Hotel on Saturday 8th February. Daniel received his award for Best Tipperary athlete of 2013, Aaron received the Roisin O'Callaghan Race Walking Award & Phoebe was honoured for her EYOF gold medal win with the Irish Girls 4 x 100m Relay team in Utrecht last July.  See photos here.

Master Class Performance
A big CONGRATULATIONS to Templemore A.C. Master's 4 x 200m Relay team who set a new National record of 1.41.17 in the AIT Arena, Athlone on Sunday 26th January 2014 at the National Masters Indoor Championships.  The team of Adrian McGinley, Johnny Doran, Brian Murray & Kenneth Lee with substitute Dinny Dunne ran an average of 25.2secs each to set a National record of 1.41.17. August 17th 2013 saw Templemore A.C. Master athletes set double National Records in the Master Men's 4 x 400m Relay (3.6.24) & the 4 x 100m (46.34). A wonderful achievement for all involved.

Congratulations to Ciara Cummins, Nenagh Olympic A.C., Emma Hennessy, Nenagh Olympic A.C. & Daniel Ryan, Moycarkey Coolcroo A.C. who all received Munster Star Awards for Tipperary for their outstanding athletic achievements in 2013. Ciara won the Tipperary Juvenile Cross Country Award while Emma & Daniel won Best Tipperary Female & Male Awards for Indoor & Track & Field. Awards were presented at the Munster Star Awards Ceremony at the Tower Hotel, Waterford on Saturday 25th January.
